Cute little (1-2 oz., 0.120 lb. avg.) red fruits come in a variety of shapes - mostly flattened and ribbed - with very good, distinctive
flavor: rich, bright, complex and quite sweet. Large, productive indeterminate vines with regular leaf foliage; 75+ days. Old heirloom with roots to Canada.
The name suggests a different species, but it is not. Becium is a genus name within the Lamiaceae family for herbs (such as cat's whiskers) found in southern Africa. Becium is an ancient name for sage, derived from the Greek word bekion. So "Microbecium" roughly means, "small sage-like plant".
Occemus is the first-person plural present active subjunctive of the verb occō, which means "till" or "harrow". So the best I can come up with for a literal translation is "We cultivate small sage". Only the originator can know what was intended with the naming of this one - let me know if you track this down!
