Kiwano Melon
NOTE:
This variety was grown in 2014 and 2023. The seeds collected in 2014 have about a 5% germination rate, while those collected in 2023 are mostly immature and will likely have an even lower germination rate. Therefore, I am listing this as "SOLD OUT" as of 2-07-2025. Order (through the Generic/shortcut ordering page) at your own risk.
Kiwano Melon
Horned Melon
Jelly Melon
Cucumis metuliferus
Vines with relatively small leaves and dense covering of thick, bristle-like, irritating hairs. Needs plenty of sunshine and warmth; do not over-fertilize or will not bear fruit. When harvested, fruits "bleed" bright red, sticky sap. Distinctive, well spaced, stiff spines cover exterior skin, which is mottled dark & pale green, ripening to orange and yellow when fully mature. Seeds are dispersed with no distinct cavity; each seed is encased in a bright-green, teardrop-shaped gel capsule. Very nutritious with distinctive, pleasantly tart, citrusy flavor that intensifying with ripening; peelings are also edible. From Africa.
