Mexican Sour Gherkin, Melothria scabra, of the family Cucurbitaceae, aka Cucamelon, Mexican Miniature Watermelon, Mexican Sour Cucumber, Mouse Melons, or Pequinos. Not a cucumber, melon or squash! Cucamelons are only distantly related to other cucurbits. Tiny, delicate vines with leaf shape reminiscent of Sugar Maple. Tiny fruits are up to 1” long with mottled light and dark green and look like a tiny rattlesnake-skinned watermelon. Average weight is 0.0084 lb., or about 4 grams. White flesh is slightly sour with a hint of sweet, as if already pickled. Great in salads or as a snack. Vines don’t compete well with weeds. Seeds harvested 10-18-2024.
