Actual: medium to large (8-18 oz.), oblate to irregularly shaped red fruits with excellent flavor: rich, lively, sweet and enjoyable – makes a great slicer! High yield on regular leaf, indeterminate vines from 88 days, though 34 days recorded in 2011 (130 from seed).
Should be: see Shapka Monomakha.
Though “Monomakh’s Hat” is in common usage, this variety is offtype and misnamed. The Russian Шапка Мономаха transliterates to “Shapka Monomakha”, a distinctly different variety; and translates to Monomakh's Cap, referring to a relic from the Middle Ages. The origin of this crown traces back to the Byzantine emperor Constantine IX Monomachus (died in 1055) and was worn by Ivan the Terrible, first Tsar of Russia, among others.
